International Police Organisation (Interpol) on Thursday issued a warrant to arrest Mombasa businessman Feisal Ali Mohammed, suspected dealer in poaching syndicate in East Africa region.
Interpol has sent out a Red Alert to member countries to assist in the arrest of Feisal, who is wanted for alleged engaging in wildlife trophies trade in Kenya.
Police say Feisal is wanted in connection to last year’s seizure of three tonnes of ivory found in a yard in Tudor in Mombasa. Interpol is expected to send the Red Alert to member countries, notifying officials it is a priority to pass along any information on his whereabouts.
A source within the police indicated that Interpol will increase information exchange, support intelligence analysis and assist national and regional investigations, to apprehend kingpins in wildlife poaching.
Mombasa County CID commander, Henry Ondiek told Xinhua the government is committed to arresting Feisal who had evaded police dragnet when police raided the yard in Mombasa and confiscated the ivory.
Two suspects who arrested in the yard, Abdul Omar and Ghalib Kara, directors of Fuji Motors, were arraigned before the Mombasa law courts and denied having 314 pieces of ivory.
On June 23, the two were released on 112,360 U.S. dollars bonds and a surety of a similar amount by a Mombasa court. The court has also issued warrant of arrest against Feisal after the suspect failed to honour court summons issued on June 11 in relation to a massive ivory seizure.
Wildlife conservationists have applauded the move by Interpol to intervene in the arrest of the Feisal whom they believe enjoy state immunity.
WildlifeDirect CEO Dr. Paula Kahumbu termed the move as bold and reprieve for wildlife campaigners over the rising incidents of poaching in the country.
