UK Anti-Terror Operations In Numbers


Theresa May has outlined the scale of anti-terror operations in Britain since the coalition took power as she revealed new powers set to be brought in to target those plotting to attack the UK.

Anti-terror operations have revealed:

:: Since the 7 July bombings in London in 2005, around 40 terrorist plots targeting the UK have been disrupted.
:: The attacks included Mumbai-style gun attacks, a plot to blow up the London stock exchange, plans to bring down airliners and assassinate a British ambassador.
:: More than 500 British nationals have travelled to Syria and Iraq for suspected terrorism-related reasons.


:: Since April 2010, 753 people have been arrested for terrorism-related offences. Of those, 212 have been charged, and 148 successfully prosecuted.

:: 138 people are currently serving prison sentences for terror-related offences.:: 13 people, including Abu Hamza, have been extradited after being accused of terrorism-related offences.


:: 65,000 items which encouraged or glorified acts of terrorism have been removed from the internet by the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit.
:: 61 people have been excluded on national security grounds and 72 because their presence was deemed to be not conducive to the public good.

:: In the same time, 84 hate preachers have been excluded and 74 organisations prescribed because they were engaged in or support terrorism.



:: 27 people have had their citizenship revoked because their conduct was not conducive to the public good.

:: 29 passports have been refused or cancelled to disrupt the travel of those planning to engage in terrorism-related activities.
